Activities and Attractions in the Bahamas
One of the most popular places to go for a relaxing vacation is likely the Bahamas, the stunning country found in the West Indies. There’s plenty of relaxing activities to do both on the shore and in the water surrounding the nation.
The Bahamas is a rather broad title, as it includes approximately 700 different islands spread throughout the Atlantic Ocean. However, the islands are all relatively close to each other and all have terrific tropical and subtropical climates.
Snorkeling is a must for anyone who visits the country, as there are plenty of unique colorful coral reefs and interesting marine life to check out. Diving is also quite popular in the West Indies, as there are several unique experiences available for tourists. For example, you can go diving with dolphins or even check out a sunken ship which was used during the days of the pirates. If you have never dived before, you don’t need to worry as the dive instructors in the country are some of the most experienced divers in the entire world.
There’s also a lot of things to do on top of the water as well. There are many unique glass bottom boat cruises which allow you to check out underwater life without even going in the water. If you have your own boat, you’re also just free to cruise around the peaceful waters and stop at any island in the West Indies that you feel like visiting. Regattas, which are sailing races, also take place on all the main islands of the Bahamas. Usually regattas are a great show to watch and you can have some great barbecue food on shore as well.
Fishermen should also have a blast in the Bahamas, as the nation is particularly known for its deep-sea fishing. Sport fishing is widely popular throughout the islands and the surrounding waters are home to abundant amount of large fish. From sport fishing to tournament fishing, the Bahamas is a great place to relax and just go fishing.
If the water isn’t really your cup of tea, the Bahamas still offers plenty of wonderful attractions and activities on land. Eating in the country is a pleasure for all, as The Bahamas has a wonderful array of seafood to
check out since the entire nation is surrounded by delicious underwater life.
Once you’re finished eating, you could go play some sports . The most popular sports in the nation are golf and tennis, as the weather is fantastic for these kinds of outdoor sports. There are a variety of courts to play on as well, as world tournaments are often held in the nation. Cricket is another sport that can be played in the Bahamas, though it isn’t as popular all-year-round like tennis and golf.
After you’re done playing some sports, you might want to go relax in the casinos. Although residents of the Bahamas are not allowed to gamble, there are many tourists who look to make it big during their dream vacations. Shopping is another alternative, as the country has many stores with a vast collection of luxurious items found throughout the entire world for relatively cheap prices. There’s also some unique Bahamian jewelry and art that you might want to go take a look at.
If you’re thinking about taking a vacation soon, you might want to go check out the Bahamas. With a great climate and wonderful scenery, the nation is a very relaxing place to go. The water surrounding the country has plenty of activities to take part in, while the shore offers many relaxing activities as well. It really is no surprise that the Bahamas is one of the most popular vacation spots in the entire world.
The Underwater Treasures of Abaco
Abaco, which is located in the Northeastern Bahamas, offers several great spots for discovering the world beneath the waves. The sites vary in depth, sea life, accessibility, and difficulty, opening up the world of snorkeling to everyone.
Just off the mainland lies Mermaid’s reef. This small reef is great for beginners, and can be reached from land or water. Under the water, several large ball-shaped reefs are home to many colourful species of fish. Parrot fish are the most interesting, as their beaks are reminiscent of teeth. Those who listen carefully will be able to hear the crunch from the Parrot fish munching on the reef.
When the waters are calm on the Atlantic side of Fowl Cay, the underwater world is spectacular. Protected by the Bahamas National Trust, Fowl Cay’s marine life is abundant. It is not uncommon to see fish of all sizes, sting rays, and even sharks! This is a popular spot for many day trips that are offered by local dive centers.
For a more relaxing excursion, the reef behind Elbow Cay is a great place to snorkel. The reef, which peaks above the water at low tide, is accessible by foot from the beach. Although this location is shallower than the others, it is inhabited by many species of coral and small fish. A similar reef is also located behind Great Guana Cay. These locations are great for those who love the beach, as the day can be spent soaking up the sun, and cooling off while studying the underwater world.
Similar to Fowl Cay, the site at Sandy Cay can also be troublesome with its current, and the large rollers that move towards the reef. The reef is located on the backside of a small cay, and is technically located in the Sea of Abaco, although one side is open to the Atlantic Ocean. Elkhorn coral is popular at this site, as are the number of large creatures. Eagle rays, Barracudas, and sharks are often seen cruising by the area. Smaller fish tend to get comfortable swimming beneath the snorkelers, following their every move.
These are only a few of the many sites to visit throughout the waters of Abaco. These places are great for snorkeling, although Fowl Cay and Sandy Cay are just as great for diving. For those wishing to see these underwater havens on their own, it is important to pay close attention to the weather. The waters often have strong currents, and can often be dangerous — even for the most experienced swimmer. It is also imperative to tie up to a mooring, and avoid using an anchor. Anchors can cause deadly damage to the reefs, which destroy the homes of many sea creatures. Another option is to join a local dive company on one of their scheduled excursions. Excursions vary in length, and are a great way to discover the local secrets.
The underwater worlds of Abaco are waiting to be discovered, so grab those masks and fins, and jump right in!
Hope Town, Elbow Cay and Great Guana Cay are within proximity to many underwater reefs in the Abacos. Both islands are small, charming, and welcoming to visitors. Great for families, couples, friends, and large groups, the islands are a great place to stay while snorkeling, diving, or just hanging out on the water.

Cable Beach is a Bahamas Favorite
Cable Beach is your home away from home. It is lined with amazing resorts and has the largest tourist infrastructure in the Bahamas. The palm trees and white sands compliment the transparent blue water. The Nassau/Cable Beach area is well known for clean and powdery beaches. This is definitely what individuals look for when choosing a vacation spot.
Cable Beach typically attracts honeymooners, simply because the atmosphere is surrounded by relaxation. There are also many choices for fine dining and duty-free shopping. Cabaret shows at night combined with beautiful casinos make this a hot spot for people of any age, specifically young adults. An array of water sports coupled with easy transportation methods allow your visit to Cable Beach to remain stress-free.
One specific resort strategically located on the beach is called Breezes. At this resort all meals, entertainment and drinks are included. The best part is tipping is NOT permitted! There are activities on the beach that are also included; however, the water sports are not. But that’s okay because it is inexpensive to go parasailing or to rent a jet ski. Enjoying the amazing water on Cable Beach is one of my fondest memories of my recent honeymoon. The feeling of being high above the calm ocean looking down on the beauty of the Bahamas as I hang from a parachute was also a fantastic experience.
Not only is this area peaceful, but the history is astonishing. Cable Beach is world famous for the multitude of upscale resorts that line it. According to travel websites it was a beach with no name until 1907 when it became the landing point for the Trans-Atlantic cable, which stretched to connect the Bahamas to the mainland in Jupiter, Florida. Today, it’s the “ultimate playground for fun in the sun”.
To the casual observer in Nassau, the British influence is undoubtedly evident. The automobile drivers on the left side of the road, the reserved uniforms of the Royal Bahamian Police Force, and the changing of the guard ceremony at Government House are just a few examples. They show that Great Britain has played a big role in Nassau’s history.
West Africa has shaped this area, too. Among other things, it’s apparent in the emotively rhythmic Junkanoo festival. Although Nassau has been influenced by other countries, such as the United States of America and Haiti, its culture is distinctly Bahamian-a unique blend of British and African customs, traditions, and beliefs.
There are several beautiful beaches, however, Cable Beach should be highlighted as extraordinary! It is a must see, must visit beach. It offers so much to its visitors and guarantees a perfect vacation!

Thousands of guests also arrive via cruise ship, and Nassau is one of the most frequently visited cruise ports in the Caribbean.
Tourism is a $2 billion industry in the Bahamas and there are dozens of historical attractions, museums, resorts, and novel sites to visit in Nassau alone. Because most visitors only have a short time to explore the city, however, it is best to know which sites are the most significant and offer the widest range of unique experiences so it is possible to gain insight into all aspects of Bahamian life.
Explore Bahamas History at Fort Fincastle
Built in 1793, Fort Fincastle is an excellent lookout offering panoramic views of Nassau and a glimpse of the city’s historic defenses. It is perched at the top of Elizabeth Avenue and can be reached by the Queen’s Staircase, a 65-step staircase carved by slaves out of a limestone cliff in the late 1700s. The adjacent Water Tower is one of the island’s most recognizable landmarks and at 216 feet above sea level, it is also the highest point on New Providence Island. After walking through Fort Fincastle, visitors can ascend an elevator to the top of the tower for a nominal fee and witness breathtaking views of the city, cruise ship docks, and nearby islands.
Find Bahamas Bargains at the Straw Market
The Straw Market on Bay Street just west of the cruise docks is one of the largest straw markets in the world, offering beaded jewelry, hand-woven bags, wood carvings, and other trinkets from hundreds of vendors. Interspersed with the unique crafts are more traditional souvenirs: t-shirts, key chains, picture frames, and shot glasses are plentiful. Shoppers are welcome to barter with merchants, and watching local artisans weave new merchandise on-site is a treat even for non-shoppers. The Market is open daily and is often augmented by small boats on the northern end where additional vendors display conch shells and other aquatic treasures.
Bahamian Natural Wonders at Ardastra Gardens
Visitors to the Bahamas will be struck by its natural beauty and exotic wildlife as they explore Ardastra Gardens, a set of extensive botanical gardens that house more than 300 species of mammals, reptiles, and birds native to Caribbean and Latin American nations. Pink flamingos are the national bird of the Bahamas, and a trained flock of the tropical birds performs three daily shows to delight young and old. Across from the Gardens is an additional botanical preserve with more than a dozen acres of carefully cultivated flowering trees and shrubs, including multiple orchid varieties that line winding pathways and decorative ponds.
Luxury Living at the Atlantis Resort
For tourists who crave a vacation of mystery and mythology, there is no better destination than the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island, just minutes from downtown Nassau. With more than 2,300 rooms in various towers and luxurious suites, this is the one of the largest resorts in the Caribbean. The resort celebrates the Lost Continent of Atlantis with numerous waterfalls, marine habitats, lagoons, and aquariums that house more than 200 species of sharks, fish, and other marine life. Underwater grottos and viewing tunnels offer visitors a rare glimpse of the natural habitats of these exotic creatures, and pools and waterslides offer adventurous marine habitats for guests. Atlantis is also home to one of the largest casinos in the Caribbean, dozens of restaurants and lounges, and the Marina Village Bahamian marketplace with more than 20 distinctive shops. Non-hotel guests can purchase access passes to the resort’s many attractions for a modest fee.
Delve into Local Bahamas Color with a Surrey Ride
Despite the many organized attractions available in Nassau, one of the best options is one of the least commercialized: a quaint surrey ride in a horse-drawn cart. Knowledgeable local drivers offer 30 minute tours of downtown Nassau in private carriages, and along the circular route passengers are treated to colorful historical tidbits and local culture. Rides begin near Parliament Square with its distinctive pink buildings (in honor of the flamingo) that surround a statue of Queen Victoria. Other tour highlights include the shopping district, where drivers point out the best stores for different shopping needs, as well as several historic homes throughout the city. Drivers are independent dealers and prices can be negotiated, though the standard rate is $20-30 per ride (not per passenger).
From historical monuments to natural wonders to luxury resorts, Nassau is the political, cultural, and economical capital of the Bahamas. Though there are more than 700 islands in the nation, 29 of which are inhabited, a visit to this lively capital on New Providence Island provides tourists with insights into all areas of Bahamian culture and history, and every visitor leaves with just a little more Caribbean spirit in their soul.
