Abaco, which is located in the Northeastern Bahamas, offers several great spots for discovering the world beneath the waves. The sites vary in depth, sea life, accessibility, and difficulty, opening up the world of snorkeling to everyone.

Just off the mainland lies Mermaid’s reef. This small reef is great for beginners, and can be reached from land or water. Under the water, several large ball-shaped reefs are home to many colourful species of fish. Parrot fish are the most interesting, as their beaks are reminiscent of teeth. Those who listen carefully will be able to hear the crunch from the Parrot fish munching on the reef.

When the waters are calm on the Atlantic side of Fowl Cay, the underwater world is spectacular. Protected by the Bahamas National Trust, Fowl Cay’s marine life is abundant. It is not uncommon to see fish of all sizes, sting rays, and even sharks! This is a popular spot for many day trips that are offered by local dive centers.

For a more relaxing excursion, the reef behind Elbow Cay is a great place to snorkel. The reef, which peaks above the water at low tide, is accessible by foot from the beach. Although this location is shallower than the others, it is inhabited by many species of coral and small fish. A similar reef is also located behind Great Guana Cay. These locations are great for those who love the beach, as the day can be spent soaking up the sun, and cooling off while studying the underwater world.

Similar to Fowl Cay, the site at Sandy Cay can also be troublesome with its current, and the large rollers that move towards the reef. The reef is located on the backside of a small cay, and is technically located in the Sea of Abaco, although one side is open to the Atlantic Ocean. Elkhorn coral is popular at this site, as are the number of large creatures. Eagle rays, Barracudas, and sharks are often seen cruising by the area. Smaller fish tend to get comfortable swimming beneath the snorkelers, following their every move.

These are only a few of the many sites to visit throughout the waters of Abaco. These places are great for snorkeling, although Fowl Cay and Sandy Cay are just as great for diving. For those wishing to see these underwater havens on their own, it is important to pay close attention to the weather. The waters often have strong currents, and can often be dangerous — even for the most experienced swimmer. It is also imperative to tie up to a mooring, and avoid using an anchor. Anchors can cause deadly damage to the reefs, which destroy the homes of many sea creatures. Another option is to join a local dive company on one of their scheduled excursions. Excursions vary in length, and are a great way to discover the local secrets.

The underwater worlds of Abaco are waiting to be discovered, so grab those masks and fins, and jump right in!

Hope Town, Elbow Cay and Great Guana Cay are within proximity to many underwater reefs in the Abacos. Both islands are small, charming, and welcoming to visitors. Great for families, couples, friends, and large groups, the islands are a great place to stay while snorkeling, diving, or just hanging out on the water.

Bahamas scuba diving sites offer you so many different options when you are visiting this beautiful region of the world. The sites with the most scuba diving locations include Andros Island, Bimini Islands, Nassau, and San Salvador: all of which offer you over thirty different, unique, extraordinary Diving Bahamas sites in each location. Meanwhile, the Grand Bahamas and The Exumas have twenty-one and twenty-nine Bahamas diving locations respectively.

Along Andros Island, you will find a number of excellent novice diving sites including Alec’s Caverns, the Amphitheatre, the Black Forest, Brad’s Mountain, Cara’s Caverns, Central Park, Coral Caverns, Dianna’s Dungeons, and the End of the Reef, the Giant Staircase, and Jean’s dream among many others. You will also find a number of unique Bahamas dive sites which are perfectly suitable for both the intermediate and the advanced diver too.

The Bimini Islands is just about fifty miles from the coast of Florida and this site too is loaded with diving Bahamas options. The Bimini Islands are actually two separate and distinct land formations, and the water is beyond beautiful in the region. Visibility when choosing Bimini Island diving Bahamas locations is equally wonderful too.

Here divers can see a fish boat that sunk in the 1990s that is now the natural home for a variety of marine life.

Divers can examine the excellent San Salvador Bahamas diving destinations too; Intermediate divers might like sites like the Black Forest which is a site accessible by boat. Here divers can enjoy a view of the Barracudas, the snappers, the sharks, and the groupers that live in the waters. With medium currents, waters that run 48 meters deep, and a visibility of thirty meters, this destination will prove absolutely unforgettable when visited during a diving excursion in the Bahamas!

When it comes Nassau Bahamas snorkeling you’re going to find a very wide assortment of different types of adventure. You can find group tours that take you all out on a boat and allow you to snorkel in offshore areas, and you can also find on the beach snorkeling and private tours.

In fact there are so many different types of snorkeling tours that it can be difficult to decide. You can look for snorkeling with the sharks via Stuart Cove’s, Paradise Island snorkeling, try Clifton Peer, or perhaps go on one of the many boat tours and snorkel off the island aways.

Whether you’re coming in on a cruise liner or staying at one of the great resorts, you’ll find that all of the tour operators are very experienced about getting you to where it’s a beautiful underwater adventure.

And the best part about snorkeling is any child that knows how to swim can do it, and any adult can enjoy it whether they can swim or not. There are many areas where you do not go over your head so if you can’t swim, throw on a life jacket and learn to snorkel.

Your tour guide operator will give you all of the equipment as well as teach you how to snorkel. It only takes a few minutes of your time to understand exactly how to hold your breath, and how to breathe through snorkel tube. Often, your gear will include a set of fins, a snorkel, and a mask so that you can see.

Once you’re comfortable, you’ll be surprised how fast the time flies. You can actually have fish come right up to your mask, see sharks, see salt water fish that you usually only see in an aquarium, and of course, enjoy the habitat of these fish known as a reef.

It’s usually not that expensive to rent snorkel gear or go on a snorkel tour while you’re in the Bahamas, enjoy snorkeling, an adventure you will won’t ever forget.

If you visit Paradise Island, Bahamas, then we suggest you add snorkeling to your “things to do” list. Tropical fish and wonderful coral await you there.

Most people aim for spots like Rose Island Reefs, the Gambier Deep Reef, the Goulding Reef Cays, the Booby Rock Channel and some easily witnessed underwater wrecks that lie in shallow water. We see that almost every hotel on Paradise Island offers snorkeling equipment and can help you cruise to spots farther offshore.

Even if you have never done it before, you really do not have to worry, because you can easily learn from experts on the island and it usually does not take long to master the tricks.

New to Snorkeling?

If you are staying at the Atlantis, then they can take you to the 7 acre Paradise Lagoon or right from Cove Beach to involve yourself in their coral reef research project. Each snorkel excursion is about 2.5 hours long and you will be taken aboard a 45 ft long Corinthian catamaran.

The Atlantis aquarist will also explain to you about coral reefs, marine conservation and the beautiful fish that dwell in them.

Stuart Cove

Stuart Cove is a top provider of Paradise Island snorkeling and diving. They have a worldwide standing for offering quality programs for guests. Eventhough you stay at the Atlantis -or any other resort- you can use their service. Just tell them where you are staying, and they will pick you up without additional fee.

Stuart Cove will take you in a half-day trip to visit shallow reefs like Nari Nari, Little Elvis, Goulding Cay and School House. These reefs are only 10-25 feet deep.

There are also a nice collection of more than a dozen wrecks on the end of the island, and a few of them are perfect for snorkeling. In general, these wrecks lie a little deeper than the shallow reefs, but do not worry – you can still see a lot. On the Carib Breeze – it’s pole rises to a point of only 8 feet below the water surface! And there’s also the Cessna Wreck

And if you are lucky (depends on how you see it really), you can encounter the famous Carribean sharks while snorkeling! These sharks usually will stay close to the bottom of the sea (which is where the bait box will be) and you will enter the water snorkeling and stay on the surface witnessing these amazing creatures in their natural environment from above.

With Stuart Cove, you can choose a morning departure or afternoon departure – which ever suits your schedule. The fee is around $60 for adults and $30 for children. This is the best package if you’re new to snorkeling in Paradise Island…

With around 700 islands in the Bahamas, snorkeling is certainly a great way to spend your time here. You don’t have to master any skill to do it, except of course the ability to swim and breathe using the snorkeling tube!

The amazing thing about snorkeling is how you can see underwater wildlife in its natural world. And not only “seeing” these wonderful creatures, you can actually mingle with them and “be” around them.

The Bahamas is very popular with its clear water, white sandy beaches and beautiful underwater scenery.

Bahamas Snorkeling Destinations

Your destinations for snorkeling are generally the underwater coral reefs than surround almost all of the islands in the Bahamas.

The Paradise Island -one of the main islands here- has some great snorkeling sites, like Rose Island Reefs, the Goulding Reef Cays, the Gambier Deep Reef, Booby Rock Channel and Lost Ocean Hole.

You can also take a 1-day cruise to the Grand Bahama Island and experience the breath-taking underwater scenery at Treasure Reef, the Caves and the Wall.

The Out Islands have more wonderful snorkeling spots. You can go to the Biminis, Andros, Eleuthera and Long Island. These are the most popular islands for snorkeling activites.

What Should You Bring?

All you have to bring is your own swimsuit, because you can rent all the snorkeling equipments easily – they are not expensive.

If you want to take underwater pictures, then don’t forget to bring your camera with a water-proof case.

Not Experienced?

If this is your first time snorkeling, then don’t worry. As long as you can swim, normally you can enjoy this activity!

There are many snorkeling operators in popular islands and they will guide you and give you useful tips about the techniques required. It could take some time to get used to the snorkel and masker, but once you master breathing using the snorkel, the rest is easy.

Just make sure you stay with your group or pairs (don’t swim alone), avoid swimming in areas where the waves break (the operator should tell you this also) and stay away from jelly-fish.

That’s it!

Enjoy your Bahamas snorkeling…
